QUETTA, July 12: Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry said here on Thursday the Supreme Court stood for supremacy of the Constitution and the law and would not accept any extra-constitutional measure in the country.

Speaking at dinner hosted by Balochistan High Court Bar Association in honor of judges of the Supreme Court and Balochistan High Court, he said: “I assure the lawyer fraternity and all other people on behalf of myself and other judges of the Supreme Court and high courts that the judiciary will continue to play its role in implementing the Constitution and the law.”

Justice Jawad S. Khwaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain of the Supreme Court, Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and other judges of the BHC were present on the occasion.

There should be no violation of the Constitution and the law, the CJP said, adding that the Supreme Court would provide justice to the oppressed. He said all state institutions were bound to work within their domains under the Constitution. He stressed the need for ensuring that justice was provided to people and said judiciary was aware of its responsibilities and decided cases in accordance with the Constitution.

He expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order in Balochistan and said police appeared to be helpless in acting against terrorists. “It is the responsibility of the federal government to restore peace in Balochistan and protect rights of its citizens.”

The CJP said people belonging to different communities, including Baloch, Pashtoon, Punjabi and Sindhi, were feeling insecure in Balochistan. He said judges, lawyers, civil society and the media had the determination not to allow any extra-constitutional act.
