ISLAMABAD, June 25: An Indian diplomat’s driver was manhandled by two persons in police uniform on Monday.

The police said the diplomat along with his son came to Black Hours Plaza in Blue Area and went into a mobile market while his driver, also an Indian national, remained in the official car bearing a local registration number.

Two persons - one wearing the uniform of an assistant sub-inspector and the other of a head constable of the capital police — approached the driver and objected to the tinted glasses in the vehicle, saying it was banned.

The driver, however, said it was the official vehicle of the diplomat and the tinted glasses were used for security purpose, adding the diplomat had immunity. At this, the driver alleged, the policemen beat him up and drove off in their motorcycle.

The driver narrated the incident to the diplomat and shortly afterward other staff from the high commission also reached the spot and informed the police. The victim and the diplomat were later taken to the Kohsar police station where the victim lodged a complaint against the policemen.

Senior police officers lined up all the ASIs in the Kohsar police station for identification but the man involved in the incident was not among them, a policeman said.

Another policeman on the condition of anonymity said the two officials had tried to remove the tinted papers from the vehicle as it bore local registration number. However, this annoyed the driver which led to a scuffle between them.—Staff Reporter
