KARACHI, June 12: Two young men were arrested in Liaquatabad and a stolen motorbike and a pistol found in their possession were seized by the motorway police on Tuesday, said officials.

The two men riding the motorbike were stopped by the motorway police on the Lyari Expressway, but one of them jumped into the river to escape, said SP Liquatabad Division Noman Siddiqui. He added that the motorway police arrested his accomplice, identified as Mohammad Latif, 30, and impounded the motorcycle that had been snatched within the remit of the Site-B police station.

In the meantime, the SP said, the fleeing man stopped a rickshaw at gunpoint and asked the driver to move fast but some people witnessing the episode chased the rickshaw. He fired multiple shots at the chasing people to keep them away, but the rickshaw was intercepted by a police team posted at a picket in the area, the officer claimed.

The people gave him a hiding before the police managed to take him into their custody and seize his pistol. During the struggle, a policeman suffered a hairline fracture in his arm, the SP said, adding that the official was provided treatment and the suspect was admitted to a hospital.
