RIP, Kully

Published June 10, 2012

I was excited to have finally interviewed RDB and was looking forward to their trip to Pakistan and meeting the boys when the sad news of the demise of Kuldeep Ral aka Kully (RDB’s music producer and DJ) hit with full force and sent me reeling into deep shock.

This interview with Images on Sunday is his last interview to the media. Indeed, his death is a huge loss to the UK bhangra industry. Kully was a producer par excellence and renowned for his knack of coming out with innovative tunes. He will be missed.

Artistes’ reaction

Akshay Kumar: “I just heard about Kully’s sudden demise from RDB. Still reeling from the shock of the news. He was such a talented guy and behind some awesome chartbusters for many of my films. My heartfelt condolences to the RDB family. RIP, Kully.”

Jay Sean: “I did some shows with you boys, I’m so sorry. My love and thoughts go to you and your family.”

Jazzy B (Punjabi music icon): “Sad news for music, Kully from RDB left us. Malak ohnu apne charna wich niwas bakshey (may God rest his soul in peace). Family nu bhana manan da bal bakshey. RIP, bro. You will be missed.”—S.S.

It provides yet more proof that the undergirding logic of public authority in Pakistan is legal and extra-legal coercion rather than legitimised consent.
