ISLAMABAD, June 7: The capital police on Thursday arrested an impersonator who looted people under the pretext of selling US dollars at a price lower than the market rate, police said.

The police also claimed to recover fake service card of the FBI and two national CNICs with different identification from the accused besides recovery of Rs2 million.

The accused used to win confidence of the people by selling them $500 to $1,000. Next time he sold them bigger amount and in some cases he succeeded in the sale of as many dollars as worth Rs5 million before he suddenly disappeared.

Earlier, one of his victims – Raja Hammad – lodged a complaint with Kohsar police station against the fake FBI agent. In his complaint he stated that he met him through another person, with whom he had some acquaintance. During the meeting, the fraudster introduced himself as the US secret agency’s official and claimed he had relations with foreigners and diplomats.

The accused also claimed that being the official of a spy agency he operated secretly and was allowed to sell gold and dollars at a price lower than the market rate.

In the first deal, the self-claimed FBI official sold Hammad a piece of gold wire and $200 which were found genuine when he got it checked by some experts.

Later, on April 15, the accused again offered him $50,000 for sale and demanded Rs4.4 million. In response, Hammad met him at the Foreign Office on April 17 and the fake agent took him to Sector E-7 where he received the money and asked him to wait till he brought the dollars.

“But he never returned and since then he was not attending his cellphone,” said Raja Hammad in his complaint.

After receiving the complaint, the Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ilyas, with the help of a moneychanger succeeded in tracing and trapping him under the pretext of a business deal. Upon his arrival at the spot, the impersonator was nabbed by police.
