RAWALPINDI: At least 25 people were killed and 60 injured in an accident near Kahuta on Sunday, DawnNews reported.

The Chakwal-bound bus was carrying 97 people who were returning from a wedding party in a village on the outskirts of Kahuta. The bus was accompanying the bride and groom, who were travelling in a separate vehicle.

The accident occurred as the bus fell into a 100-feet-deep ditch after the driver lost control of the vehicle at a sharp bend near Narr village, around 25 kilometres east of Islamabad.

Police official Jawad Tariq told AFP the accident happened at 10:30 pm on Sunday. The driver lost control at a sharp bend in the road, he said.

“At least 23 people, including six children and as many women, were killed and 60 others injured when a bus fell into a ravine,” Tariq said.

Rescue teams from Rawalpindi reached the site of the incident and began operations. Members from the armed forces were also called in to assist in rescue work.

The bodies and injured were shifted to hospitals in Rawalpindi where emergency had been declared after the accident.

Pakistan has one of the world's worst records for fatal traffic accidents, blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
