Electricity to refugee camp cut

KOHAT, June 1: The Wapda on Friday disconnected electricity supply to Afghan refugee camp for not paying power bills for some time. The residents of the camp, especially children, suffered due to disconnection of the power supply.

The SDO Wajidullah told journalists that Rs4 million were outstanding against the residents of Ghulam Banda refugee camp, and despite repeated warnings the residents were not paying the bills. After which the Wapda staff carried out operation and removed the meters from the camp.

He asked the people to submit their electricity bills in time and also stop using hook system to get electricity from the main transmission lines which was extremely dangerous and detrimental for the whole system.—Correspondent

Security on road to Kurram

PESHAWAR, June 1: A delegation of tribal elders and elected representatives from Kurram agency, at a meeting with Governor Masood Kausar on Friday, asked for improved security on Thall-Parachinar road.

The delegation headed by Sajjad Hussain Turi, chairman standing committee on states and frontier regions, informed the governor that travellers faced ‘severe threats while passing through the main road to Kurram Agency because of unavailability of security measures.

It asked the governor to direct the authorities concerned for taking effective security measures to ensure safety on Parachinar road, according to a press release.

The governor said the government wanted peace in the region to ensure public safety. He asked the tribal elders to shun differences to help block the anti-state elements from exploiting the situation to their advantage.—Bureau Report  

‘Police aiding land grabbers’

PESHAWAR, June 1: A resident of Charsadda has accused the Gulberg police of supporting a group involved in illegal occupation of his residential plot and demanded of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IGP to help recover his land from the grabbers.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Friday Arshad Siddiqui complainant he had bought a plot measuring 47 marlas from Chand Bibi, daughter of Nasrullah Khan, and the documents were also transferred accordingly.

He said a group of armed men led by Amir Safdar and Ashfaq Safdar had forcefully vacated the house from his tenant in presence of 40 police personnel and also occupied the belongings of the tenant. Mr Arshad alleged the SHO Sardar Hussain and additional SHO Zahir Shah were hand in glove with the land grabbers.—Bureau Report

CJ visits bereaved family

HARIPUR, June 1: The Pakistan Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry arrived here on Friday on a short visit to condole the death of Justice Azmatullah Malik of the Peshawar High Court with his family.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry stayed with the family members of the deceased for some time and offered Fateha for the departed soul. He prayed to Almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and provide courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.

Large number of lawyers and judicial officers also visited the residence of Justice Azmatullah who died a day earlier due to liver cancer. The chief justice expressed his profound grief over his death and told his family members that they may take solace in the fact that the entire judiciary was as much in grief as they were.—Correspondent

Karak UC without girls school

KARAK, June 1: Former nazim of the Gurguri union council Aqal Baba has regretted the fact that there was no high school for girls in the entire union council.

Speaking at a public meeting at Gurguri here on Friday, he said it was criminal negligence on part of the concerned authorities that the union council had no high school for girls.

He said the soil of Gurguri was contributing a lot in the GDP of the country in the shape of oil and gas but in return the girls of the union council were deprived of education facility.

The former nazim criticised the provincial minister Mian Nisar Gul for neglecting the union council and victimising the people for not voting for him. He said despite their repeated requests the provincial minister failed to establish a high school for girls in the area.—Correspondent

Water supply project

ABBOTTABAD, June 1: The government has constituted provincial review board and provincial project steering committee to monitor progress on the Rs4.5 billion project to supply clean drinking water to Abbottabad.

The work on the gravity flow water supply project has started again after a dispute between Abbottabad city and cantonment administration over water distribution was resolved.

Sources on Friday said the dispute between the Abbottabad city and cantonment administration was resolved at a meeting held in Peshawar presided over by the provincial chief secretary. The sources said more than 70 per cent work on the project has been completed. They said the donor agency, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), had taken strong exception to the stoppage of work on the project.—Correspondent

Man killed on road

KARAK, June 1: A boy was killed when a pick-up hit him in Banda Daud Shah here on Friday.  Police said the teenaged boy, Farnan, was crossing the road near the government high school Ahmadi Banda when a pick-up van (9508 B Peshawar) hit and killed him instantly. The relatives of the boy pardoned the driver and termed it a mishap.

Meanwhile, the Terri police with the support of local volunteers’ group recovered a kidnapped man on Friday.—Correspondent
