THIS is with reference to the news report, ‘Police against trying Sharif brothers’, (May 18).
If the Supreme Court can take suo motu action against: NRO, PCO judges and scores of other past rulings; why can it not punish the Sharif brothers for willfully and unlawfully storming the Supreme Court and removing a sitting Chief Justice?
Then those who are the up-holders of the law: the police, have “cautioned the Interior Minister, Rehman Malik that the exercise would be counter-productive”.
In his interim report SSP Islamabad, Muhammed Yusuf Malik informed the minister that instituting cases against the two political heavy weights would cause embarrassment to the government and benefit its opponent.
The Sharif brothers would term it as political victimisation. In other words what the Police are saying is that they are unwilling to pursue the case for reasons other than stated.
The IG Police, Islamabad, has the audacity to say that he would not like to get involved in any controversy as he has 18 months to go for retirement. This is non-sensical.
Can a police chief for personal reasons refuse to carry out an investigation on the most flimsy excuse of political controversy? Since the Chief Justice is out to clean the Augean stables, I request the Interior Minister to pursue the case irrespective of the consequences.
