PESHAWAR, May 11: A deputy superintendent of police on Friday survived a bomb attack, while three people were killed in separate incidents in the provincial capital.

A bomb exploded near the Ring Road bridge moments after a police vehicle with DSP at the City Circle Banaras Khan on it passed by it in the morning.

The DSP told reporters that he was on the routine visit to different parts of the city and as he was entering GT Road from Ring Road near a bridge, the blast took place.

An official of the bomb disposal unit said around two kilogrammes explosives packed in a plastic can was planted in a manhole and detonated through a remote-controlled device.

The explosion was so loud that it was heard in different parts of the district. It damaged vehicles, including two Edhi Foundation ambulances parked nearby.

Officials of the Paharipura police station said the prime target of the bomb attack was the DSP but he escaped unhurt.

It was the second blast in the area during the last two days with the first injuring security personnel in Badbher area.

In another incident in the day, a child worker died during blast at a scrape godown inside Shafi Market on Ring Road.

A police official of the Chamkani police station said initial investigation had revealed that the evening blast was caused by a faulty battery.

He said name of the child had yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen on Friday killed a tribal elder in Hashtnagri area.

An official of the Hashtnagri police station said Malik Dilawar belonging to Mohmand Agency was on the way to home when he was gunned down.

He said Mr Dilawar was shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital in critical condition where he breathed his last.

The official said the tribal elder’s relatives had yet to contact police for registration of case.

Mr Dilawar remained associated with Awami National Party and also worked for peace in his area as head of the agency council.

Also in the day, Haji Habibullah was killed in the limits of Bala Manri police station.

Mohammad Younas, son of the dead person, named several people for the murder, saying his father has an old enmity with them.

An official of the Bala Manri police station said Mr Habibullah belonged to Darra Adamkhel area of FR Peshawar.

He said a case had been registered against unidentified killer(s).
