KARACHI, May 11: A sessions court on Friday disposed of an application about illegal detention of a man at a police station when the applicant withdrew the plea.

However, the court severely criticised the police for illegally detaining the man.

On the directive of a sessions court, a bailiff raided the Darakshan police station on Thursday and got Shakeel Ahmed released on personal bond and asked both the parties to appear before the court.

When the additional district and sessions court (south), Abdul Razzaq, took up the matter on Friday, the bailiff submitted his report in which he stated that he found the man confined at the police station.

The bailiff said that the police told him that the man had been apprehend on suspicion under Section 54 (when police may arrest without warrant) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), but failed to produce any FIR.

The man ran a general store within the remit of the Darakshan police station and he had a dispute over rent with his landlord and the same was reported to the police station prior to this incident, the bailiff said in the report.

The judge came down too hard on the two police officials who appeared before the court on Friday.

However, the court disposed of the matter when the applicant requested that he wanted to withdraw the plea. Haji Mohammad Achakzai had filed a habeas corpus application under Section 491 (power to issue directions of the nature of a habeas corpus) of the CrPC in the court and submitted that his son had been picked up by the police from his shop in DHA who kept him in detention for the past two days and prayed to the court for his recovery.
