KARACHI, March 25: A gunny bag containing the body of a young man was found on Sunday shortly after his younger brother, who went out in his search, was shot dead in North Karachi, said police.

The victims were not affiliated with any religious or political party, said the police, suspecting that both the brothers were killed over personal enmity.

Twenty-seven-year-old Qasim Ilyas had gone missing on Saturday, said an official at the Khwaja Ajmair Nagri police station.

When he did not return home till Sunday morning, his family became worried and subsequently his brother, Ayaz Ilyas, 25, went out to find him, the official said.

Quoting eyewitness accounts, the police said Ayaz was targeted by armed men riding a motorcycle in Sector 5-C/1 of North Karachi.

Following the shooting, residents shifted the victim to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died during treatment, the police said.

Shortly afterwards, they added, a gunny bag containing the body of the victim’s elder brother, Qasim, was found in the same sector.

Qasim had a meat shop in the area and his younger brother, Ayaz, was a photographer, said Ajmair Nagri SHO Illyas Shah.

On a complaint of the victims’ father, Mohammad Ilyas, and their brother-in-law, Kamran, the police registered two cases (FIRs 123/2012 and 123/2012) under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

“Since the victims were not associated with any political or religious group, personal enmity could be a motive behind their killing,” said SP of Gulberg Division Tanveer Odho.

However, he said, investigations were under way to ascertain the actual motive. Qasim was said to have some friends with criminal backgrounds, the SP added.

Weekly bazaar shooting leaves two dead A stallholder and his cousin were shot dead on Sunday in a weekly bazaar in Block 13-D of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, said police.

None among the stallholders or visitors was willing to share the details regarding the identity of the attackers.

Kamran Majeed, 27, used to set up a stall at the Sunday bazaar, organised near the level-crossing in Block 13-D, on a regular basis, said a duty officer at the Aziz Bhatti police station.

He said a few days back, his cousin, Abdul Aleem, 32, had come from Gilgit to visit him. He was staying at his flat in Micasa Apartments.

As a matter of routine when Kamran was leaving for the bazaar, his cousin accompanied him.

“The attackers are believed to have walked away after the shooting as a motorbike cannot be brought there,” said DSP Nazeer Abro.

The bodies were later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities.

Till Sunday night, an FIR of the murder had not been lodged at the Aziz Bhatti police station.
