The development of Press is vital: Azam

CHITTAGONG: East Pakistan Governor Lt-Gen Mohammad Azam Khan said here yesterday that the development of the national Press was of vital importance. He was speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Chittagong Press Club building at Jamal Khan Road here last evening Gen Azam highly commended the role of the Press, specially the Chittagong Press. He pointed out that the Press had to carry out many great responsibilities. It had its duty to the nation and to the country, he added.

The Governor said that the Press was entrusted with the task of reflecting the people’s views for the guidance of the Government and at the same time carrying the Government policies to the people. The Governor said that the Press in Pakistan was rendering a wonderful service and was trying its best to make the country stronger.

He donated Rs1,000 for sports requirements of the Club and Rs1,000 for books and other reading material to the Press Club.— Agencies

Most tortured animal of the year

KARACHI: Horses was the most tortured animal in the city, according to the statistics released by the SPCA for the year ended June 1961. Till the year before, it was donkey that were the most tortured animal; and horses were a close second.

In 1957-58 the SPCA had detected 1,415, cases of cruelty to donkeys.—Staff correspondent
