KARACHI, Feb 24: An anti-corruption court on Friday sentenced an official of the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) to two years imprisonment in a graft case.

The court found the then sub-inspector of the KWSB (revenue) guilty of taking money other than legal remuneration from the complainant in May 2007.

Justice Rashida Asad of the special provincial anti-corruption court read out the conviction order and also imposed a fine of Rs50,000.

In case of default the convict would have to undergo an additional three-month imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the complainant Tabassum Riaz purchased a house in PECHS in May 2007 and the accused approached the complainant and threatened to overcharge in water and sewerage bills unless he was paid a bribe. The complainant reported the matter to the anti-corruption establishment when the official collected Rs50,000 and demanded Rs10,000 more, it added.

A party of anti-corruption personnel under the supervision of a judicial magistrate caught the accused red-handed while taking a bribe from the complainant.

A case (FIR No 45/2007) was registered against the accused under Section 161(public servant taking gratification other then legal remuneration in respect of an official act) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 5(2) the Prevention of Corruption Act.
