KARACHI, Feb 18: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday sentenced an extortionist to five years in prison.

The court found Abdul Qavi Naseem guilty of extorting money from a complainant by putting him in fear of death within the remit of the Eidgah police station in August 2011.

Judge Bashir Ahmed Khoso of the ATC-I read out the conviction order after hearing arguments from both sides.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs20,000 and in case of non-payment, the convict would undergo an additional six-month imprisonment.

The prosecution said that the accused had made a number of calls to complainant Zahid Anwar, a chief financial officer in a private company, on and after Aug 20, 2011 and on Aug 28 the police arrested him red-handed near the Civil Hospital when he came to collect the protection money.

The court remanded him back to prison with a conviction order to serve out the remainder of the awarded sentence.
