KARACHI, Feb 15: An anti-terrorism court on Wednesday sentenced an extortionist to five years in prison.

The court found Abdul Rehman guilty of extorting money from a garments dealer by putting him in fear of death within the remit of the Kalri police station in March 2011.

Judge Khalida Yaseen of the ATC-II read out the judgment after hearing both sides.

The prosecution said that the absconding accomplice of the accused had demanded protection money from the complainant on the phone and sent the accused to collect the same, but police arrested him red-handed on March 26, 2011.

The accused was brought before the court in custody and while extending the benefit of section 382-B (period of detention to be considered while awarding sentence of imprisonment) of the criminal procedure code to him the court remanded him back to prison with a conviction warrant to serve out the remainder of the awarded sentence.

A case (FIR No.81/11) was registered under Sections 387 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
