LAHORE, Feb 9: Inspector General (IG) Javed Iqbal appointed on Thursday DIG Maj Mubasharullah (retired) an inquiry officer to probe the registration of a second case of Alhamra Cultural Complex stampede casualties.

Gulberg police had registered a murder case against Punjab Group of Colleges’ owner Mian Aamir and others on the complaint of Muhammad Nawaz Warraich of Canal View for the stampede which led to the death of three students. Nawaz’s daughter had also died in the stampede.

A couple of news channels reported late on Thursday that the Punjab government issued orders for cancellation of the FIR. However, a senior police investigator said the DIG would be looking into the matter to decide about the status of the FIR.

A police source told Dawn DIG Mubashar grilled police officers linked with the second case and two complainants at Chuhng police station and directed the officers to record their statements on Friday (today).

Former Model Town SP (operation) Malik Muhammad Awais, Gulberg circle ASP Shahzad Naeem Bokhari, Gulberg additional SHO Shafique and FC College Chowki in-charge SI Idrees appeared before the investigation officer.
