KARACHI, Feb 8: Two armed men on Wednesday attempted to flee after killing a traffic policeman on Sharea Faisal when they were overpowered by on-duty traffic police officials and navy personnel.

The officials were present at an intersection to block traffic from Lines Area towards Sharea Faisal in connection with ‘intizam duty’.

Police said that the armed men riding a motorbike had snatched valuables from someone in the Lines Area and were on the run when they saw the traffic police at the intersection.

In a bid to break away, they fired at ASI Abdul Jabbar, 45, as he tried to stop them. However, other on-duty traffic police officials caught one of the attackers. The navy personnel, who were also present there, got hold of his accomplice, said SP Gulshan Salam Shaikh.

A complainant, meanwhile, reached the crime scene and identified the riders as those who had deprived him of his valuables, the SP added.

While a crowd of onlookers tried to rough up the suspects — Junaid and Atif — they were handed over to the police, the official said.
