KARACHI, Oct 9: A number of students had to suffer as points buses of Dow Medical College were kept off the roads in view of the law and order situation on Tuesday.

A senior college official said that the buses which provide pick-and-drop facilities to its students were not sent to residential areas in the morning and students came though private or public vehicles. Though the attendance remained thin, teaching and other assignments were carried out at the college on a routine basis.

However, a students’ wing at the college claimed that classes were not held on Tuesday as it had given a call to students to boycott classes in order to register their protest against the US-led military strikes in Afghanistan.

“We also urged the college transporters not to bring out buses today,” added a member of the students’ wing.

College sources said that the authorities had already requested the police to provide protection to college buses by escorting them, as under the volatile law and order situation in the city, there were chances of damage to the DMC buses.

“One of the buses was pelted badly a couple of days back by a mob in the city, but luckily the students remained unhurt,” added a college official, saying that buses were being brought out under police protection since last Monday and it was hoped that the police would continue to extend cooperation to them.
