Man kills grandfather

CHAKWAL, Feb 7: A man killed his grandfather over a domestic dispute in Dhoke Chaki village of Talagang tehsil, police said on Tuesday.

Adam Khan, 62, was present in his house when his 25-year-old grandson Amir Khan attacked him with an axe, killing him on the spot.

Police investigation officer Pervez Akhtar said Amir’s wife was angry as the couple did no have a separate house. Amir had been insisting that his grandfather should give him money for construction of a new house but the latter refused.

“The accused will be arrested soon,” the IO added.—Correspondent

CDA issues gagging order

ISLAMABAD, Feb 7: Management of Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Tuesday issued a notification barring all officials from giving statements or interacting with media persons.

The notification said: “No official and directorate of the CDA will issue any statement to the media except for the chairman.”

When contacted, CDA spokesman Ramzan Sajid said the notification was issued to avoid issuance of unofficial press releases by some directorates.

However, it is believed that the restriction has been imposed to prevent unofficial comments regarding different news items against the CDA and its policies.— Staff Reporter

Centre named after Dr Atta

ISLAMABAD, Feb 7: The national university of science and technology (Nust) named one of its research centres after Prof Dr Attaur Rehman on Tuesday during a function.

The centre has been named as “Attaur Rehman School of Applied Biosciences”.

Addressing the science community at the occasion, Prof Atta said: “Pakistan can make rapid progress through development of science, technology and education and for that government must carry on the momentum which was accelerated in 2002”.

The renaming ceremony was held at university’s main campus with Dr Attaur Rehman being the chief guest and Rector Nust, Engineer Mohammad Asghar in the chair and it was attended by large number of academic scientists from different institutions.

Earlier in October last year, Mara University of Technology in Malaysia also announced that it will establish a large research centre in the field of Natural Product Chemistry named after him. Karachi University has also named one of its research centres after him earlier.— A Reporter

New unit in capital police

ISLAMABAD, Feb 7: A separate elite investigation unit and prosecution wing will be set up in the Islamabad police for speedy probe into cases of heinous crimes.

Addressing the passing-out parade of 15th lower course batch of the police on Tuesday, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said the separate investigation unit and prosecution wing would be provided all resources.

He said officers posted in the wing would be given one-step higher rank on the basis of their professional capabilities.

He also directed the Police Foundation to complete necessary work on launching a housing scheme for low cadre employees. He said 5,000 more personnel would be inducted in the police after the upcoming budget.

The minister asked the policemen to discharge their responsibilities with honesty and dedication to meet the expectations of people.

He also distributed prizes among the position holders in different categories. A total of 283 constables, including 19 females and children of martyred personnel, passed the course. — Staff Reporter
