NOWSHERA, Nov 17: Ten people were drowned when a boat sank in the Kabul river at Mian Essa, some 20 kilometres from here on Saturday.

The local administration has confirmed that 10 people died, and 18 others were rescued. Only one body was recovered. The owners of the boat Zari Dad Shah and Tilawat Shah managed to swim to safety.

Eyewitnesses said about 30 people were on board the boat when it lost balance soon after leaving the bank. As the water began to flood the boat, people, mostly labourers, started to jump into the water. The boat sank within minutes.
