NAWABSHAH: Tapping alternative energy sources, proper waste disposal and production of energy from waste would go a long way in tackling key issues cropping up rapidly with the fast rising world population.

Former vice-chancellor of the University of Sindh Mazharul Haq Siddiqui speaking at the 2nd international conference 'Role of energy resources in sustainability of environment' said that sustainable future of cities depend on takingcare of the above mentioned issues.

The conference was organised by the Energy and Environment Engineering Department at Quaide-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology (Quest) in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), on Monday.

Creating awareness on environment by arranging conferences will help Pakistan, like rest of its counterparts in developed states, in producing experts he said while assur-ing provision of opportunities to the department.

Vice Chancellor of the Quaid-e-Awam University Prof Ali Bux Soomro also felt the need of creating awareness about the issues related to energy and its impact on the environment. The university, he said, was keenly devoted in finding solution to energy crises as creation of the related department was a proof to it, he said. The country was facing severe energy shortage which was taxing the patient of people to maximum, while negatively impacting the national economy.

He asked the industry and stakeholders to support the country technically, financially and in job placement issues.

Prof Saleem Raza Samoo, Dean Faculty of Engineering and Chairman of the Organising Committee praised the participants of their interest. The conference proved to be an ideal platform in highlighting key issues in formulating strategies to strengthen energy sector, he said.

Oil, gases, coal, nuclear, wind, biomass, solar, waves are major source of energy and arrangements should be made by policy makers and stakeholders to fully utilise these, he said.

Deputy Director of the Sindh Alternative Energy Department, Niaz Ahmed Janjhi outlined the possibilities of solar energy and suggested technologies for taking advantage from it. 'Solar technology needs innovation and proper attention which if applied will lead to social development.

Research papers on different aspects of energy and environment like potential resources, conservation, and technologies and its impact on economy, industrial pollution, prevention and mitigation, role of biomass and bio fuels, environmental issues and concerns, water treatment, marine pollution and environmental conflicts were presented in six sessions.
