LAHORE, Jan 9: The Lahore High Court on Monday sought personal appearance of Punjab University acting vicechancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran on Friday to explain his position on a petition challenging a Punjab government's notification allowing him to serve as acting-VC during interregnum.

Hearing a petition filed by Prof Dr Mugheesuddin, a candidate for the slot that fell vacant after Dr Kamran's term expired on Jan 2, Justice Sheikh Ahmad Farooq also sought reply from the higher education department secretary and others by Jan 13.

The petitioner submitted that Dr Kamran had completed his four-year term as vice chancellor and could not have been granted extension or interim charge.

He said giving extension to a retired person was an unlawful act and violation of the Supreme Court's judgments.

The petitioner asked the court to set aside the impugned notification.
