CHITRAL, Jan 5: A USAID-funded project is being launched in Malakand division to create awareness of women’s rights and check gender-based violence in all the seven districts of the civil division, including Chitral.

Speaking at a press conference here on Thursday, coordinator of Dehi Ijtimai Taraqiati Social Workers Council Lal Badshah said that the project was aimed at achieving gender equality, without which social harmony and development was not possible.

He said that in the first phase, seminars, lectures and other such programmes would be conducted for dissemination of information about gender equality. He said that in Chitral the council would execute the project in partnership with Young Stars Welfare Development Organisation.

Mr Badshah said that besides physical attack the gender violence also included denial of rights to women. He said that Aurat Foundation and Asia Foundation would provide technical assistance for execution of the project.

He said that different events would be organised on February 12 to observe ‘Pakistan Women Day’. —Correspondent
