FAISALABAD, Nov 25: A tug-of-war is going on between the Tehsil Municipal Administration (city) and revenue officers of the district government over the issue of launching an operation against adulterators, profiteers and encroachers.

City Nazim Mumtaz Ali had asked the revenue officers who had been delegated magisterial powers by the Punjab government not to raid shops in eight bazaars of Circular Road, Narwala Road, Kotwali Road, Canal Road, Railway Road and other adjoining commercial centres because it was the responsibility of the TMA staff.

The Nazim also approached the district coordination officer and asked him to stop interference of the revenue officers in TMA affairs. But no progress from the DCO side had so far been witnessed, TMA sources said.

On the other hand, the revenue officers arrested 19 more shopkeepers and vendors from different parts of the city for selling consumer goods at high rates. Dozens of shopkeepers were arrested for not displaying price lists. All the arrested shopkeepers and vendors were sent to jail for seven days after registration of cases against them.

A revenue officer on the condition of anonymity admitted that a cold war was going on between the TMA and the revenue officers.

Governor Khalid Maqbool, after receiving complaints about sale of kitchen items at high rates and adulteration in food articles, had delegated the powers of magistrates to revenue officers of the district governments as a special case.
