Doctors’ body in mourning

TAXILA, Dec 30: Young Doctors Association (YDA) Rawalpindi rural chapter on Friday announced three-day mourning at the cold-blooded murder of Police surgeon Dr Baqir Shah in Quetta.

Flanked by other office-bearers, Dr Imran Younus, YDA senior vice-chairman, while addressing a press conference on Friday, made the announcement regarding the three-day mourning. He said young doctors condemned the killing of Dr Baqir Shah in Quetta and Dr Talal Sabir in a shootout at Taxila.

He said Dr Shah was a witness to Kharotabad incident as he had carried out autopsies of five foreigners including two women who were shot dead on May 17.

He said Dr Baqar had been receiving threats and he requested the provincial government to provide him security.

Dr Imran said YDA had convened an emergency meeting to review the situation and formulate a strategy following the murder of doctors. — Correspondent

Nomination rejected

ISLAMABAD, Dec 30: Nomination of former President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FPCCI) Tariq Sayeed for the election of Board of Directors of Islamabad Stock Exchange (ISE) was rejected by Securities Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

The nomination papers sent to SECP for scrutiny were rejected under rule 22 of Securities Exchange Ordinance 1969.

Sources said that the applicant made a false statement in his affidavit and on the basis of improper information the election commission rejected his nomination papers. Mr Sayeed, a prominent businessman, has served as President of SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry and President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).

Eight nominations were filed for five private seats in the ISE Board of Directors. As the papers of Mr Sayeed had been rejected and one candidate withdrew his nomination, six candidates are left in the run. — A Reporter

Security beefed up

ISLAMABAD, Dec 30: As part of stringent security measures on New Year eve, extra contingent of police comprising more than 300 personnel would be deployed at important places, shopping centres and markets.

According to the plan issued here on Friday, the security would be beefed up at Blue Area, Super Market, Jinnah Super, F-10 Markaz, F-11 Markaz, Kohsar Market, Daman-i-Koh, Pir Sohawa, Aabpara and Faizabad. Besides, Quick Response Unit, Anti-Terrorism Squad and police reserves will remain alert in case of any untoward situation.

Special traffic police squads will also patrol the main arteries including Jinnah Avenue, Murree Road, Islamabad Highway, Expressway to curb one-wheeling and racing. — Staff Reporter

Resource centre, digital library

MURREE, Dec 30: A modern, state-of-the-art resource centre and a digital library set up at a coast of Rs100 million were inaugurated by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif here on Friday.

Located at Kashmir Point, this resource centre has been completed in a record time of six months. Millions of books and journals have been uploaded in the digital library and modern equipment will be made available to the users.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahbaz Sharif said by adopting modern trends in education, the new generation can compete with the modern world.

He said his government was not merely raising slogans but practical revolutionary steps were being taken for the uplift of education system in the province.

He said 32,000 new science teachers were being inducted in Punjab and 100,000 laptops were being provided to the talented students, purely on merit. He said this modern resource centre will be a great source of education and information for talented students, parliamentarians and common people visiting the hill station from all over the country.

Later, on request of MNA Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the chief minister announced that a campus of Punjab University would be opened in Murree. — Correspondent
