LAHORE, Dec 16: PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has supported the rightwing parties for holding a public meeting here on Sunday (tomorrow) against Nato attacks and government’s plan to give the most favoured nation status to India, but refused to commit on his party’s participation.
A seven-member delegation of the Defa-i-Pakistan Council, a conglomerate of around 40 rightwing parties, called on Sharif and invited him to the event the council would arrange on Dec 18.Sharif praised council’s campaign against the attacks, but was reluctant to commit on his or his party’s participation, saying the decision would be taken in consultation with party leaders, a member of the delegation said.
The council team was led by former ISI chief Gen Hameed Gul (retired), the creator of the rightwing alliance of IJI against the Benazir Bhutto-led PPP in 1988. Other members of the team were Liaquat Baloch, Hafiz Abdur Rehman Makki, Pir Ijaz Hashmi and Maulana Abdur Rauf Farooqi.
The delegation member quoted Sharif as saying that every party should play its role because the country was in troubled political waters. The PML-N president was also quoted as saying that Nato attacks were the result of wrong policies and the government should revisit its foreign policy.
