Two shot dead

PESHAWAR, Dec 13: A policeman and another person were shot dead in different areas of Peshawar on Tuesday.

An official of the Yakatoot police said Sardar Ali Khan, stenographer at DIG Peshawar office, was coming from a local mosque after offering morning prayer when unidentified gunmen shot him dead. The victim’s father Ajab Khan said he had no enmity with anyone and did not nominate anyone in the case. The complainant said he belonged to Swat and at present was settled in Peshawar.

In another case, Noor Zada of Fatuha Abdur Rahim village was allegedly shot dead by a group of his relatives. An official of Chamkani police said FIR had been registered against Fazal Rahim, Fazal Rehman and Fida Mohammad.—Bureau Report

Miner killed

NOWSHERA, Dec 13: A labourer was killed and another sustained serious injuries when a coalmine they were working in caved in on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said Barkat Ullah, resident of Swat and Nazim Ullah were working in coalmine (No 9) at Shahkot area when all of a sudden the mine collapsed burying alive the two workers. The rescuers retrieved the body of Barkat and injured Nazim Ullah. The injured was taken to hospital in critical condition. Later, body of the deceased was sent to his native village in Swat.—Correspondent

Pak-Afghan relations

PESHAWAR, Dec 13: The Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Mohammad Omer Daudzai called on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar here on Tuesday.

They exchanged matters of mutual interest to their countries, regional situation, and the prospects of improving diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to a handout. The governor highlighted the importance of cordial relationship between the two neighbours. He said improved relations were needed in the best interest of the people of the two countries.—Bureau Report

University in Karak

KARAK, Dec 13: A full-fledge university should be established in Karak district instead of only a campus.

This was demanded by the Khattak Ittehad general secretary Malik Fareed Azam and other members of the organisation in a press conference here on Tuesday.

They warned the provincial government to not create unnecessary hurdles in the establishment of university in the district. They argued that Karak district had better literacy rate across the province and deserved to have a university. The KI leaders regretted that now when the federal government was going to establish the university in the district the provincial government was creating hurdles. — Correspondent

Workshop on planning

UPPER DIR, Dec 13: A planning and development workshop was held at Akhagram on Tuesday which was attended by community members and elders of the area.

The workshop was organised by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) through its early recovery project in flood effected communities of Pakistan. Tehsil education officer Muslim Khan was chief guest on the occasion. The participants of the workshop said the project would cover enterprise rehabilitation and livelihood restoration, Tehsil agricultural officer Fasih Uddin was invited as an agricultural expert who had a question-answer session with the community members. —Correspondent
