ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani called on President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday soon after the appointment of Ms Sherry Rehman as Pakistan’s new ambassador to the US. “The army chief met the president at the presidency where he was invited to attend a special investiture ceremony held to confer the award of Nishan-i-Imtiaz (military) on Gen Hou Shusen, Deputy Chief of General Staff of China,” President’s Spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.

A one-to-one meeting between the president and the army chief took place before the ceremony.

The president and the COAS discussed fast-changing developments, including the resignation of former Ambassador Husain Haqqani and appointment of Ms Sherry Rehman as the new ambassador.

The sources said the issue of inquiry ordered by the prime minister into the memogate issue also came under discussion.

Some private TV channels reported that the army chief also met Prime Minister Gilani, but there was no official confirmation.

Ms Rehman also met the president and prime minister on Wednesday. “Her meeting with the president lasted half-an-hour,” President’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.
