KARACHI: Sixteen hundred people took their lives during the last 10 months in Pakistan, DawnNews quoted the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) as saying.

The HRCP, moreover, expressed its concern over the increasing trend of suicide and stated that some 800 people had also unsuccessfully attempted to take their own lives.

The commission sighted poverty and hopelessness as the main reasons behind the troubling trend.

The HRCP lamented that the government was least concerned over the issue and urged it to take steps which would restore confidence in the people and help curb the trend.
