LAHORE, Oct 25: A special committee formed by the chief minister on Tuesday assessed different aspects of the provincial excise department’s tussle with the Murree Brewery over the imposition of duty on a raw material used for producing alcohol. The committee is headed by Additional Chief Secretary Nadeem Hasan Asif, and in its first meeting it considered different aspects of the issue.

The committee was constituted by the chief minister on the request of the brewery and it is expected to submit its recommendations in the next few days.

The manufacturing of alcohol by the largest and the oldest brewery in the country has been affected since July this year after it and the excise department locked horns over the issue of excise duty on a raw material used for the purpose.

The company had first approached the chief secretary and then the chief minister for a favourable decision.
