LAHORE, Oct 7: An anti-terrorism court on Friday released Muhammad Ebrahim on bail, who was involved in attack on Sri Lankan cricket team squad near Liberty Chowk in March 2009.

The court directed the accused to furnish bail bonds of Rs100,000 and one personal surety too.

Ebrahim took a plea that he was implicated in the case as he had no criminal record. He said the main accused was already allowed bail by the Supreme Court, therefore, he also attained statutory right of bail.

The prosecution alleged the accused (Ebrahim) along with Qari Wahab alias Umar Draz, Zubair, Naik Muhammad, Malik Ishaq, Mohsin and Ashfaq attacked a bus of Sri Lankan team with AK-47 rifles, rocket and hand-grenades.

At least six policemen were killed and as many Sri Lankan players, the bus driver and an assistant coach were injured in the attack.

Plea against Musharraf: Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court on Friday recommended formation of a larger bench to hear petitions pertaining to extradition of former president Gen Pervez Musharraf (retired) and initiation of high treason proceedings against him under Article 6 of the Constitution.

As the proceedings started on Friday, leading counsel A.K. Dogar highlighted legal importance of the case and asked Justice Saeed to refer the same to the chief justice for constitution of larger bench to hear the same.

The counsel pointed out that a petition against the prime minister was already referred to the chief justice for constitution of a larger bench, therefore, the instant case should also be heard by a bench comprising more than two judges. Justice Saeed accepted the argument and referred the case to the chief justice.

The petitions were filed by Rana Ilamudin Ghazi and Aziz Ahmad Awan, Tameer-i-Pakistan Party secretary general.
