VIENNA, Nov 11: Indian citizens have taken over from Afghans and Iraqis as the biggest group of foreigners apprehended at Austria’s borders for illegal entry, according to police reports on Monday.

Since Friday, 22 from a total of 60 refugees and migrants arrested in north-eastern Austria were Indians. Ten others were from Pakistan, seven from Moldova, and six each from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Further west, in the border area between Austria and the Czech Republic north of Linz, police spoke of a new stream of Indian citizens. They were mostly young men without travel documents trying to get into the country under cover of darkness.

At the border town of Freistadt, police said that in the past three weeks the number of Indians had been noticeably high. As many as 90 had been arrested in Upper Austria Province and another 31 on the Czech side of the border.—dpa
