ISLAMABAD: The commission investigating the May 2 US raid in Abbottabad recorded statements of police and civil administration officers on Thursday to ascertain how Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden got refuge in the highly sensitive military area.

Chairman of the commission Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal and its members Abbas Khan, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi and Lt-Gen (retd) Nadeem Ahmed visited Abbottabad for the second time this month.

An official handout said: “The commission conducted interviews of officers from the civil administration and local police. The officers gave perspective of their organisations about the events, following the Abbottabad operation.”

The commission will record statements of notables, neighbours of the Osama compound and media volunteers at the Commissioner’s House in Abbottabad on Friday.

Sources said the commission also met some officials of the local civic authority and electricity and gas departments to ascertain how the owner of the Osama compound had managed to obtain utility connections.
