PESHAWAR, Nov 6: Amjad Ali Shah, who had lost his eyesight 20 years ago due to cataract complication, regained his vision after being operated upon by a senior ophthalmologist, Dr Mustafa Iqbal.

Shah had developed inflammation in his right eye which was treated by Dr Iqbal, the lone vitro retinal expert at the Khyber Teaching Hospital.

He had developed a complicated cataract as a result of inflammation, which led to severe decrease in his right eye.

All these years, he ran from pillar to post seeking help from ophthalmologists across the country but to no avail.

He met Dr Iqbal by chance in the OPD who advised him an operation to restore the normal architecture of the eye and remove the cataract.

The cataract was very hard one due to years of neglect and was removed using a technique called phacoemulsification. It was replaced with a foldable lens.

Because of the complicated nature of the disease it required a high degree of expertise and precision. When contacted, the doctor stressed that a system should be evolved where such patients are referred to people with expertise at an earlier stage to tackle their suffering.

After the operation, the patient said he was feeling much better and, with the passage of each day, the eye vision was improving.

“I had been referred to other parts of the country by senior ophthalmologists but no one referred me to the specialist concerned,” he complained.—APP
