LAHORE: Former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan on Tuesday said that the demand for calling out the army in Karachi would not be an unconstitutional step.
Talking to mediamen at the Lahore High Court Bar, he said that Karachi was an ecnomic hub of the country and deterioration of law and order was a serious matter.
He said terrorists had occupied mohallas and some areas and in such a situation calling out the armed forces to help the civil government would not be a violation of the the Constitution as it allows the army to serve under the civil government for aid.
He said that it had not happened first time that bodies were being recovered from sacks. This had also happened in 1987, 1988 and then in 1990”, he said.
Now the matter is not limited to a specific house rather the terrorists had taken control of entire areas, he said and added MQM was key to bringing the situation to normal.
Aitzaz said that Karachi was a multi-ethnic city and everyone was not a terrorist but some terrorists were taking shelter behind political parties and had also turned certain places into 'no go' areas.
He said it is not correct to say that government has totally failed to control the situation and therefore it should quit.
He said this is an elected government and it is duty of all the people to work for peace in Karachi. He said if any officer fails to do his duty, he should be replaced but it would not be fair to blame the whole government for it.
