Two killed in Tank

TANK, Aug 22: Two people were killed in different incidents here on Monday.

In the first incident, a girl, Pattasa Bibi, was killed when unknown assailants opened fire on her after scaling the wall of her house. Gul Amin, brother of deceased girl, told police they were asleep at the courtyard of their house when unidentified persons barged into the house at night and shot his sister. Later she succumbed to her injuries. He said they have no enmity with anybody.

In the second incident, Rais Gul, son of Gulistan, was killed when he fell from a speeding tractor trolley.—Correspondent

Girl commits suicide

HARIPUR, Aug 22: A young girl committed suicide over unknown reason in Khanpur area here on Monday.

Police said Danish Yasmin, 16, daughter of Shahnawaz Abbasi of village Dartian, locked herself in a room of her house and shot and injured herself with a 12-bore shotgun.

The injured was shifted to Khanpur civil hospital but she bled to death before receiving any medical care. Her parents however did not know what drove her to take such an extreme step.—Correspondent

Violence in Ramazan

PESHAWAR, Aug 22: Human Mercy, a national welfare organisation, has expressed grave concern over killing of innocent people in bomb blasts and target killings and asked the militants to stop shedding the blood of people and resolve their issues through negotiations with the government.

Speaking at a meeting here on Monday, Human Mercy chairman Mufti Noorul Ameen said it was duty of every Muslim to respect the holy month of Ramazan, maintain peace and discourage those who make lives of people miserable.

He said the holy Quran taught its followers to abide by the tenets of Islam and prove themselves true peace lovers. He said his organisation would distribute food items, clothes and other commodities of daily use among the needy students, orphans and widows.—Bureau Report

Zakat funds

LAKKI MARWAT, Aug 22: The ANP Lakki tehsil chapter has demanded of the provincial government to release zakat fund and special Eid package for the poor and deserving people of the district before Eidul Fitr.

In a meeting held here on Monday chaired by tehsil chapter president Sardar Ali Khan advocate, the ANP leaders said poor were waiting for financial assistance to meet their Eid related expenses. They said provision of zakat fund and Eid package would enable the deserving people to celebrate Eid with joy and happiness.

“During the last over three years zakat fund was distributed among the poor and deserving people in transparent manner in the district,” they maintained, saying, the government will not disappoint the destitute people this time too.—Correspondent

Criminology journal

PESHAWAR, Aug 22: Pakistan Society of Criminology has published the special issue of Pakistan Journal of Criminology (April-July, 2011). The issue is edited by Prof James F Albrecht of the US, a retired NYPD officer and a graduate Professor of Homeland Security at Pace University, New York.

The issue focuses on ‘enhancing effectiveness and leadership within law-enforcement and criminal justice’.

There are ten different research articles in the current issue on police and policing, terrorism and peace-making, restorative justice, ethnicity and police deviance, written by scholars and practitioners from US, Turkey, South Africa, Pakistan, Canada, UK, Norway and Iran.

The Editor-in-Chief Fasihuddin has underlined in his note the causes of failure of Pakistani law-enforcement agencies to effectively counter the threats of terror.—Bureau Report

Results declared

MARDAN, Aug 22: The Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan on Monday announced the results of BA, BSc part-I and part-II annual examinations 2011 with 37 per cent students getting successful.

According a press release, 18,997 candidates appeared in the examinations of which 7,038 were declared successful.

In science group part-II, Sara Khatoon of the Government Postgraduate Girls College Mardan stood first by securing 474 marks.

Asad Ullah of the Government Degree College Khair Abad and Nida Nasir of Fazaia College Risalpur jointly bagged second position by securing 473 marks each while Shah Qasim Jan of Government Postgraduate College Swabi got third position with 471 marks. In Humanities Group, Ayesha Ijaz of the Government Postgraduate Girls College Mardan stood first. —Correspondent
