KARACHI, Aug 19: A drugs court on Friday issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of two police officials for failing to appear in court and non-compliance of its orders in two cases pertaining to the manufacture and sale of substandard drugs.

Inspectors Gulfraz Khan and Zahid Hussain Bukhari had neither appeared in court to record their statements nor produced case properties in two separate cases despite repeated notices and issuance of warrants against them.

The three-member drugs court, headed by its chairman Sathi M. Ishaq, issued non-bailable warrants against both the policemen through the provincial police officer with a direction to arrest and produce them in court till next hearings.

The court also ordered the police authorities to stop the salary of Inspector Zahid Bukhari and also issued him a show-cause notice.

The court directed the authorities to block the pension of Inspector Gulfraz since it came into its notice that he had been retired from.

In the first case, Mohammad Hashim, Fida Hussain, Ghulam Sarwar, Abdul Majeed and others have been charged with manufacturing and selling substandard, unauthorised and expired injections.

According to the prosecution, acting on a tip-off a team of the Azizabad police station headed by Inspector Gulfraz Khan intercepted a vehicle in Karimabad in July 2002 and recovered dozens of expired injections.

Later, acting on a lead given by the accused the police raided a house and found huge quantity of expired injections, it added. Gulfraz was the complainant as well as the investigation officer of the case. However, he had not been appearing in court since 2006.

The hearing was adjourned till Sept 24.

In the second case, a police party headed by Inspector Zahid Bukhari carried out a raid within the remit of the Azizabad police station in June 2002 and seized a reasonable quantity of substandard and unauthorised bottles of cough and other syrups.

Wali Mohammad, Mohammad Nadeem, Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, Ibrahim and others were booked under the Drugs Act of 1976 on a complaint of Inspector Bukhari, who was also the IO of the case.

However, he did not turn up in court for the last many years.

The hearing was put off till Sept 15.
