KARACHI: The Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) has submitted names of five pugilists for the London Olympics qualifying tournament being staged in Baku, Azerbaijan from Sept 22 to Oct 10.

“As deadline for the entries was to expire on Aug 20, the PBF submitted the entries with the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA),” a PBF spokesman said here on Thursday.

However, he said final decision regarding the number of boxers to be sent to Baku will be decided in due course of time.

The PBF has sent the entries of Mohammad Wasim (49kg), Haroon Iqbal (52kg), Mohammad Hussain (55kg), Aamir Khan (65kg) and Nisar Khan (75kg) to the AIBA.

The spokesman added that Mohammad Wasim and Haroon Iqbal are the country’s best prospect for the qualifiers, saying they won the bronze medal during last year’s Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

The PBF official said all the quarter-finalists from the qualifying rounds will earn the right to feature in next year’s Olympics boxing competition.

He further said besides London Olympics qualifying event another qualifying contest from the Asian continent will be held at a later date where more boxers may earn entry for the London Olympics.

He said a training camp of the boxers in the build-up for Olympic qualifiers will be conducted here after Eid-ul-Fitr.—APP
