
KARACHI: A five storeyed building collapsed in the lyari area of Karachi on Thursday killing seven and injuring several others, DawnNews reported.
Army Corps of Engineers team had also arrived at the scene to take part in the rescue operation.
A labourer, Abdul Ghafoor, lost two of his children, 22-year-old Bilal and 8-year-old Areesha and four of his other children were injured as the building he was living in with his family caved-in on Thursday morning.
Other dead included 60- year- old Hawwa Bai, Imran (25) and a five- month-old unidentified girl.
Rescuers had managed to help out 15 injured, all residents of the top floor of the five storeyed Qasr-e-Ruqqaiya (Ruqqaiya Building) located in Moosa Lane, Lyari.
The injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi and were provided the needed medical assistance.
According to doctors with an exception of two injured, who reported with head injuries, all others were in comparatively stable condition.
Abdul Ghafoor and his wife, both daily wage earners had left their home with a son Mohsin before their house collapsed.
Kiran aged 17, Komal 20, Adil 20 and Areeba were four of the other children of Abdul Ghafoor who were injured as the building disintegrated.
Other injured included one- year- old Muskan, daughter of Imran and Sumaira, wife of Imran; Aaliya Riaz (26), Kulsoom Yousuf (32), Imran Yousuf (38) Perveen Abdul Ghafoor (45), Abdul Ghafoor (54), Bilquis Altaf (40), Shayan Altaf (three), Bilquis wife of Hanif, Amina Iqbal (55).
They all were residents of the fifth floor of the five- storeyed building located in old city area and are people of meagre resources, living under cramped conditions.
Rescuers fear more casualties as search operation continues in the debris of the building.
