Canal closure causes water crisis

Published November 3, 2002

BAHAWALPUR, Nov 2: Irrigation water crisis deepened in the district due to continuous closure of canals.

With the closure of these canals, even drinking water was not available in the far flung areas. As the canals have dried up, people have to fetch water from far off areas.

Farmers are worried due to shortage of water as the agriculture department has asked them to sow wheat by Nov 20.

They said if canal were not opened immediately, wheat sowing target would not be met.

Meanwhile, due to shortage of canal water, the production of citrus fruit would drastically fall.
