ISLAMABAD: Tennis star Aisamul Haq, who is a National Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for Early Recovery, has announced a donation of $10,000 for flood recovery activities in the country.

According to a press release issued here on Friday, the donation comes from the Haq Foundation through funds contributed by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour, the regulatory body of the game.

Aisam made the announcement during a visit to Mazdoor village in Jati tehsil of Thatta district where the UNDP is engaged in a rehabilitation project for flood survivors.

The village was destroyed by last year's floods and the UNDP is supporting the reconstruction of 198 houses, installation of solar-powered streetlights, rehabilitation of community infrastructure and livelihood and vocational training for women.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that he was impressed by the resilience and self-help spirit of the community and to “see the joy returning to the people's faces as I hand over the keys to their houses”.

This is the second donation through Aisam. Earlier, international tennis champions Bryan Brothers contributed $10,000 through which nine houses were built in Bagho Teweno, Dadu district.

The UNDP is working across 22 badly-affected districts and an estimated 915,000 people in 700 villages will benefit through the interventions.

Aisam was accompanied by UNDP Country Director Toshihiro Tanaka and representatives of the Health and Nutrition Development Society.
