LONDON: Liverpool owner John Henry said on Friday the club were keen to redevelop Anfield into a 60,000-seater stadium but warned the plans may not be possible because of “many obstacles”.

Henry and the Fenway Sports Group have made the issue of Liverpool's stadium a priority since taking the club over in October, insisting their preferred option would be redevelopment of Anfield.

Club officials believe increasing Anfield's capacity is essential to allow them to compete with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.

However Henry said on micro-blogging site Twitter that any redevelopment of Anfield would face several hurdles.

“Anfield would certainly be our first choice. But realities may dictate otherwise. So many obstacles...” Henry wrote on Twitter.

A club spokesman later denied however that Liverpool chiefs have already decided to move out of Anfield into a new home at Stanley Park.

“The club's position on the stadium issue remains unaltered and no decision has been made,” said a spokesman.

“We are continuing to examine both the options - the refurbishment of Anfield and the new stadium in Stanley Park.

“A huge amount of work on that is ongoing and an announcement will be made in due course.”
