US envoy to discuss Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, Nov 14: The newly named US special envoy to the Afghan opposition, James Dobbins was due to arrive in Islamabad on Wednesday night for consultations on Afghanistan.

The Foreign Office spokesman Aziz Ahmed Khan said at his daily briefing that Mr Dobbins will be “arriving tonight” and will hold meeting with Secretary Foreign Affairs Inam-ul-Haq on Thursday.

To a question, Khan said that he would discuss the overall situation in Afghanistan and the rapid developments that took place over the past few days in Afghanistan. James Dobbins was in Rome on Tuesday for a meeting with Afghanistan’s ex-monarch Zahir Shah.

The spokesman said that the US special envoy would stay for a day or two for consultations.

A spokesman for the US embassy said the special envoy’s talks would centre around “working towards what everybody is agreed upon, and that is a broad-based government in Afghanistan.”

The spokesman declined to say whether Dobbins would later be heading to Kabul.

Dobbins’ trip to Islamabad comes after talks in Rome with Zahir Shah which the US envoy said produced agreement on the need for “the most broadest and inclusive coalition” in Kabul. —APP/AFP
