SUKKUR, June 1: The shank support bund of the Indus river developed a two-kilometre long breach near Ghotki on Wednesday, inundating six km kutcha area and blocking access to 22 villages but luckily the water did not flood fields and houses nor did nay harm to humans or animals.
Reports said that the breach occurred in the morning in the shank support bund which was not a protective bund.
According to people of the area, the water did not enter any village nor caused any damage to crops and 75 per cent water had returned to the river till the filing of this report.
Villagers and farmers of the area told journalists that if the provincial government did not take serious action to repair shank support bund it would add to pressure on Qadirpur loop bund and other protective bunds during upcoming rains and floods season.
Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority Director Anwer Sial said that the shank support bund acted like other bunds on the river. ”Water enters in katcha areas and returns after sometime and it often happens during summer, people of kutcha areas know about it and should not fear it,” he said.
He said that it was not a breach but it was overflow of the river. The villages in the kutcha areas were illegal and set up on encroached riverbed but when they were flooded they had the audacity to protest as well, he said.
