ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: A constitutional petition, seeking advice from the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding the application of graduation condition on the reserved seats of women, was filed in the apex court here on Wednesday.

The petition, filed by the central vice-president of PML-Q, Begum Yaqoot Jamilur Rehman, prayed that section 8-A of the Conduct of General Election Order 2002 could not be applied to the members, who would reach parliament on the reserved seats of women through political parties nominations.

The section 8-A restricts a member to be elected as member of parliament if he or she is not graduate.

APP ADDS: Speaking at a press conference, Begum Yaqoot said she had sought from the apex court that would those women who reach the national assembly through nominations by respective political parties, had to fulfil graduate condition like those who won direct contests in general elections.

Hoping that the petition would be admitted for hearing, she said, advice had also been sought that would the women reaching the assembly on reserved seats, be able to cast votes on various issues under discussion in the National Assembly.

Moreover, would the women coming on reserved seats be eligible for the slots of speaker and deputy speaker of the National Assembly.
