KARACHI, May 12: The Korangi Industrial Area police have arrested two suspects in the Rs3.3 million bank robbery case and seized weapons and recovered a part of the booty, said DIG East Captain Tahir Naveed on Thursday.

“The suspects were identified with the help of the CCTV footage of the Wednesday’s robbery at the private bank branch,” he said while speaking at a press conference.

He added that the arrests were made at a Korangi bus stop where the suspects, Waseem alias Wali alias Bani and Sajjad Hazaraywal alias Gul Faraz alias Gul Raaz, had reached in an attempt to leave the city.

He claimed that earlier some raids were conducted in different areas that finally led to their arrest.

“We recovered Rs780,000 from Waseem and Rs151,000 from Sajjad. Two pistols were also seized from them,” he said.

The DIG told the media that a total of seven people were involved planning and executing the robbery at KASB Bank branch near Chamra Chowrangi.

“Five are still at large,” he added.

Fortunately, the footage remained safe during the robbery, he said. “After examining the evidence, we raided a hideout in the early hours of the day.”

The robbers had already distributed the booty when the two suspects were arrested and the remaining amount was most likely with the other suspects who were still at large, he added.

During initial interrogation with the suspects, it emerged that most robbers were not the residents of Karachi and the key suspect originally hailed from Dir.

He said the investigators also learnt that the gang of robbers included two brothers of the suspects. “Police teams are being prepared to make their arrests,” the DIG said.

An FIR (472/2011) was lodged at the Korangi Industrial Area police station under Sections 392 (punishment for robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on a complaint of the branch manager.
