SUKKUR, May 10: Writer and historian Shoukat Ali Khowajai received burn injuries as assailants threw acid on him at his house here on Tuesday.

Mr Khowajai, 55, was present in the Otaq (guest room) of his house in Makki Shah Muhallah when three attackers entered the room and threw acid on him.

He was taken to Civil Hospital Sukkur where doctors said that 40 per cent of his body had received burn injuries and an eye had been damaged.

Mr Khowajai was referred to Karachi as there is no burns ward in the hospital.

The C-Section police on the complaint of his son Nizakat Ali have registered an FIR against Azizullah Katpar, Abad Farooqi and Azad Farooqi and arrested Azizullah.

According to Nizakat Ali, a dispute involving the shrine of Sattin jo Astan near Rohri was behind the attack. He said that their family had association with the shrine since their ancestors and his father used to spend much time there.

The accused wanted to one of them installed as the Sajjada Nashin of the shrine and had repeatedly asked Mr Khowajai to keep away from it, he said.

In another incident, an elderly man was strangulated to death in Dakhan Bungalow near Kashmore.

According to relatives, six people entered the house of Mohammad Salah Dasti, 60, and strangulated him to death.
