Woman dies on road

TAXILA, May 4: A speedy bus of University of Engineering and Technology (UET) crushed a woman to death on GT Road at Margalla intersection on Wednesday morning, Police said.

According to reports, Atyia Bibi, 38, was crossing the GT Road at Margalla intersection when a speedy bus of UET (RPT-9930) ran over her. Resultantly, she received serious injuries and was taken to THQ hospital but she succumbed to the injuries. The police registered a case and investigation was under way.— Correspondent

Two given in FIA custody

ISLAMABAD, May 4: Senior Civil Judge Mohammad Aslam Gondal on Wednesday gave two employees of the immigration and passport office allegedly involved in a passport and visa scandal on three-day physical remand in the custody of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Rafaqat, an assistant, and Nisar, a lower division clerk, were arrested by FIA on May 3 on suspicion of corruption and forgery. The FIA presented the accused before the senior civil judge seeking 14 days’ remand to conduct investigations.

The FIA team informed the court that two passports - OR-034208 and OA-744160 - had been recovered from the possession of the accused.

Scrutiny of record revealed that 27 visa stickers, from number VF-885274 to VF-885300, were missing from the section which was looked after by the two employees. The FIA investigation officer told the court that recovery of the visa stickers and facts about the two passports necessitated that the accused be remanded in their custody.

The judge allowed only three days’ remand with the direction to the FIA to produce the accused before him on May 7. — Staff Reporter

Telephone exchange

ISLAMABAD, May 4: A telephone exchange established by Islamabad police at Aabpara police station on Wednesday started functioning with focus on streamlining the working of the department and making the communication among the cops and official more effective.

Eight PTCL or NTC lines have been provided to the exchange and 48 extensions have been connected through it for the effective communication among the police officials.

The main police offices including special branch, police line, SSP house, SP offices and houses have been connected through intercom facility by the exchange.

On the occasion Deputy Inspector General of Police Bani Amin said that Islamabad police was committed to facilitating it employees and improving their efficiency through providing them best technology. He said that it was now up to them to acquaint themselves with latest facilities and ensure better working. — Staff Reporter

Water shortage

ISLAMABAD, May 4: The residents of Bhara Kahu are facing acute water shortage for the last many days.

Faisal Khan, a resident of New Abadi, said he was not receiving water regularly and had registered a complaint in this regard but nobody was taking it seriously.

“We have not been getting water for three days and the officials concerned say they do not have any water tanker at the moment,” he added.

He said the shortage of water had made his family’s life miserable.

He complained that illegal water connections were a major cause of the water shortage, as they pumped most of the water. He said the people had also installed suction motors in their houses to fill their tanks.

He said the officials concerned were aware of the problem but were paying no heed. — APP
