MULTAN, Oct 17: School and college teachers on Thursday continued protest rallies across the Punjab against the denationalization of educational institutions.

In Multan, hundreds of school and college teachers staged a protest rally against the introduction of board of governors at the state-run educational institutions.

The protesting teachers gathered at the Civil Lines College under the banner of the Joint Action Committee of various representative organizations of the teaching community.

They held a protest meeting at the college which was addressed by Syed Tanvir Shah, Mehmooda Irfan Wyne, Rana Walayat, Mehdi Hasan Tariq, Ramzan Malik, Razzaq Shahid and others.

The speakers vowed to carry on their struggle against the wholesale of education through the board of governors.

The BoGs, they claimed, would close the doors of educational institutions for the poor man’s child on the one hand and jeopardise the job security of teachers on the other. They also criticized the policy of contractual postings.

The significant development of the teachers’ movement was that the teaching staff of institutions affiliated with the technical education and vocational training authority had also joined hands with the teachers of general education institutions.

Later, the teachers took out the protest procession from the Civil Lines College and marched up to Kutchery Chowk. They also chanted slogans in favour of their demands. Activists of various student organizations, however, dominated the protest procession.

A heavy police contingent escorted the procession and no untoward incident occurred as the teachers dispersed peacefully.

SAHIWAL: Three students were arrested and 30 booked on various charges when they took out a procession to protest against privatization of educational institutions.

The rally had been led by students of the local government college.

The Farid Town police registered cases against 30 students, who had allegedly lifted five bicycles.

The police are conducting raids to make more arrests.
