LAHORE, April 4: Punjab Board of Technical Education’s (PBTE) governing body has sought ‘unfair means cases’ against 266 students who got their results tampered through officials of the board’s computer section and formed a committee to identify the officials involved in the scam.

PBTE controller of examination Prof Muhammad Tariq exposed last week that results of DAE and D.Com second annual examinations for 2010 were tampered. It was found that 598 results of 266 candidates were changed when the board’s computer section was tasked with transferring the final results from fictitious roll numbers to original roll numbers. In all identified cases, students were given marks to pass in all papers.

PBTE governing board’s meeting chaired by board chairman Dr Muhammad Shafique on Monday directed that all results of 266 candidates should be withheld and no diploma be issued. The board directed the computer section to mark the identified roll numbers involved in the scam.

The board formed an inquiry committee consisting of Dr Nazir Usmani, Associate Professor at the Government College of Science on Wahdat Road; Muhammad Khalid, chief instructor at the Government Polytechnic Printing and Graphic Art; and Saleem Tariq, IT expert at the Government College of Technology on Raiwind Road.

The board has decided to institute unfair means cases against all 266 candidates and take disciplinary action against them.

The board recommended that the PBTE should hire services of an IT consultant to assess board’s computer system and plug loopholes in the system.
